President Trump signed an executive order Monday that pushes for major changes to how children receive vaccines in the United States. The move puts him at odds with the country’s leading pediatric and medical organizations.

Here’s what the order actually does, and why doctors are pushing back.

What Does the Executive Order Do?

The order calls for spacing out childhood vaccines into separate medical visits and splitting the combined measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) vaccine into three separate single-disease shots.

It also directs the nation’s health department to expand research on vaccines and develop a plan to offer separate measles, mumps, and rubella shots, since that combination doesn’t currently exist as three standalone vaccines in the U.S.

Why Is Trump Pushing This?

At the Oval Office signing, Trump repeatedly suggested the number or timing of childhood vaccines could be linked to rising autism rates. That claim runs counter to the scientific record. Decades of research and the broad scientific consensus have found no link between vaccines and autism.

The White House framed the move around giving parents clearer guidance, arguing that families deserve evidence-based recommendations rather than competing guidance shaped by political processes.

Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. was present for the signing.

What Do Medical Groups Say?

Doctors and public health experts have raised real safety concerns about the spacing approach specifically. Public health experts warn that spreading out vaccines increases the risk that a child could catch a vaccine-preventable disease in the window between visits.

This isn’t the first clash between the administration and pediatric groups this year. Back in January, the American Academy of Pediatrics broke from the CDC entirely, issuing its own updated vaccine recommendations covering 18 diseases, a direct contrast to the administration’s slimmed-down federal schedule. A dozen additional medical and health care organizations endorsed the AAP’s version.

The pediatricians’ schedule keeps broad endorsements for vaccines targeting RSV, hepatitis A and B, rotavirus, influenza, meningococcal disease, measles, and pertussis.

Has This Come Up Before?

Yes. Trump has floated several of these same vaccine schedule changes before, but a federal judge has already blocked prior attempts by his health department to implement them.

The flu shot has become a specific flashpoint too. The AAP’s own January guidance included a flu vaccine recommendation, backed by groups including the National Medical Association and the Pediatric Infectious Diseases Society, citing data that over 80% of childhood flu deaths occurred in unvaccinated or incompletely vaccinated children, with kids under 5 at the highest risk. Trump has said the flu vaccine is “no longer recommended for all children.”

Why Now?

The renewed vaccine push marks a shift for the administration, which had recently focused on less controversial health topics like healthy eating, drug price negotiations, and medical fraud crackdowns ahead of November’s midterm elections.

Bottom Line

This executive order sets up a deepening split between the White House and the country’s major pediatric and medical organizations. Trump argues families deserve simpler, more cautious guidance. Doctors argue the spacing approach adds real infection risk without any scientific backing for the autism claim driving it. For more on how this policy develops, check out [our latest coverage of health and policy news] on the site.

This article will be updated as medical groups and health agencies respond further.

A federal judge has hit pause on part of Donald Trump’s $10 billion defamation lawsuit against the BBC. Here’s what actually happened, and what it means for the case going forward.

What Just Happened?

U.S. District Judge Roy Altman stayed a magistrate’s order that would have required the Donald J. Trump Revocable Trust to hand over financial documents to the BBC. Those records dated back to January 1, 2023.

The pause is temporary. It’s in place while the court decides whether Trump can amend his defamation complaint.

Why Did the BBC Want These Records?

The BBC argued the financial documents were relevant because Trump claimed the network’s coverage damaged his brands and businesses. If Trump is arguing financial harm, the BBC’s position is that it should be allowed to examine the actual finances tied to that claim.

The BBC has publicly opposed Trump’s effort to amend his complaint, calling it an attempt to sidestep the discovery process.

What’s the Lawsuit Actually About?

Trump is suing the BBC over a 2024 Panorama documentary that edited together two separate parts of a speech he gave on January 6, 2021. The edit spliced the sections in a way that made it appear Trump directly told supporters to march on the Capitol, while cutting a section where he called for a peaceful protest.

Trump is seeking $10 billion total in damages, split into two claims: $5 billion for defamation, and $5 billion under a Florida law targeting deceptive and unfair trade practices.

The BBC has apologized for how the speech was edited, but it continues to deny the claim that it defamed Trump. The controversy led to the resignations of the BBC’s top executive and its head of news back in November 2025.

Where Does the Case Go From Here?

This isn’t the first discovery fight in the case. Back in February, the same judge rejected a separate BBC request to pause discovery entirely while a motion to dismiss was pending. At that point, Altman called the request premature.

The case is currently set for a two-week jury trial in Miami, starting February 15, 2027, unless the two sides settle first. Altman has also ordered both parties to attempt mediation before the trial date.

Bottom Line

This latest pause only affects one specific discovery order, not the case as a whole. The bigger trial date, set for February 2027, remains on the calendar. For more on how this legal battle is unfolding, check out [our latest coverage of media and legal news] on the site.

This article will be updated as the case develops.

A rift usually stays quiet inside veterans’ organizations. This one didn’t.

The American Legion’s Texas department broke publicly with its own national leadership this month over the Take Care of America’s Veterans Act, a sprawling benefits bill better known by its acronym, TCAVA. Texas wants national headquarters to reverse course and oppose the bill outright. National headquarters, so far, isn’t budging.

What Actually Happened in Austin

The split became public right after the Texas department wrapped its 107th annual convention in Austin, held July 7 through July 12. Veteran advocate Elizabeth Hartman posted about it shortly after, describing Texas as having split from national and demanding the organization oppose TCAVA.

People online debated what “split” even meant here. Some read it as a full break. Others read it as Texas issuing a strongly worded objection, not leaving the organization. Either way, commentators called it close to unprecedented for a state department to publicly break ranks with Legion national headquarters like this.

National headquarters hasn’t backed down. National Commander Dan K. Wiley keeps calling TCAVA a $58 billion proposition, and he’s arguing Congress needs to pass it now, before the savings tied to VA disability rating changes get swallowed by the Treasury instead of funding veterans programs.

The One Provision Causing All the Trouble

TCAVA isn’t a single-issue bill. It bundles more than 60 proposals covering disability compensation, health care, education, caregiver support, survivor benefits, and transition programs. It also carries the Major Richard Star Act, which would expand concurrent retirement and disability pay for combat-injured veterans who retired short of 20 years of service. That piece has bipartisan support on its own.

The fight is over Section 108. That’s the part that would change how the VA rates future disability claims for tinnitus and sleep apnea. It wouldn’t touch benefits already awarded — anyone currently rated stays rated. But it would lower or eliminate what current service members and future veterans could claim for those conditions going forward.

A coalition of 15 veterans and military organizations ran the numbers and landed on roughly $57 billion in costs shifting onto as many as 1.5 million future claimants. Their argument isn’t that TCAVA’s other 59-plus provisions are bad. It’s that Congress shouldn’t pay for popular programs by quietly reducing what younger veterans and future retirees can claim.

Then the House Rules Committee closed off debate on it. Democratic amendments that would have stripped Section 108 or replaced its funding offset with something else never got a floor vote — the rule blocked them before they could.

National Leadership’s Case for the Tradeoff

Wiley doesn’t pretend this is a clean win. He’s said publicly that the Legion would rather future veterans not foot the bill for programs that help veterans today. His argument is about what’s realistic: the Major Richard Star Act and similar priorities have failed to pass on their own, year after year, without some kind of funding offset attached. TCAVA, in his view, is the version that actually has a shot at getting through Congress.

National leaders also point out that the VA could make the same tinnitus and sleep apnea rating changes through regulation, with or without this bill — except then the savings wouldn’t go toward veterans programs at all. Wiley says the money TCAVA frees up would fund suicide prevention, traumatic brain injury care, and caregiver assistance, among other programs.

Mission Roll Call, a separate veterans organization, has pushed Congress to move fast and pass the full package, citing broad support for TCAVA overall even amid the Section 108 backlash.

What This Doesn’t Change — Yet

Texas breaking ranks doesn’t force national headquarters to change its position. The American Legion nationally is still publicly campaigning for TCAVA’s passage. But the split makes an internal argument visible that’s usually kept behind closed doors: how much should today’s veterans’ wins cost tomorrow’s veterans?

That question isn’t going away quietly. If more state departments follow Texas’s lead, national leadership may have a harder time claiming a unified membership behind the bill — even if the numbers on paper still say Legion supports it.

Roger Rogoff fired” is already trending in Seattle news today — and for good reason: he held the job for just 54 minutes.

Federal judges in the Western District of Washington swore him in as U.S. attorney at 7:40 a.m. He headed over to the U.S. Attorney’s Office downtown, expecting to meet the man he was replacing and start settling in. Instead, while he was sitting in the lobby waiting, an email showed up on his phone. Subject line: “A Message From the President.” President Trump had fired him.

Rogoff didn’t sound bitter about it afterward. Asked what it was like to hold the job for less than an hour, he told KOMO News it was simply the greatest hour of his life.

It wasn’t exactly a shock, either. Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche had already warned back in March that any U.S. attorney Western Washington’s judges picked on their own would end up like the other court-appointed prosecutors his administration had pushed out in New Jersey and upstate New York.

Rogoff’s team is reportedly weighing a lawsuit. If they file, it’ll be one of the more direct legal challenges yet to how the administration has been handling these judicial appointments.

Why Roger Rogoff Fired So Quickly Wasn’t a Total Surprise

The Western District hasn’t had a Senate-confirmed U.S. attorney since Nicholas Brown resigned back in 2023. Since then it’s just been a rotation of interim picks, most recently Charles Neil Floyd, a former immigration judge Trump installed last October.

Floyd’s nomination never actually went to the Senate. When his 120-day interim term ran out in February, instead of letting the clock trigger a judicial appointment, the administration just renamed his title to “first assistant” and kept him running the office anyway. It’s a maneuver a federal appeals panel has already looked at skeptically. Washington Sen. Patty Murray had also said flatly she’d block Floyd if he were ever actually nominated.

So in January, with no nominee in sight, the district’s judges announced they’d fill the seat themselves. They have that authority under Section 546(d) of federal law once the 120-day appointment window closes — which is exactly what they did Wednesday, naming Rogoff unanimously.

Two very different explanations

Blanche didn’t argue that the judges lacked the legal authority to make the pick. His complaint was that they skipped consulting the administration first, something he called the usual “time-honored process.”

Rogoff sees it the opposite way. The president gets to nominate a U.S. attorney, he said, but only with the Senate’s sign-off — and firing him without any conversation first strikes him as unlawful.

Murray backed the judges’ choice, framing the administration’s approach as a way of dodging the confirmation process rather than following it.

Floyd, for his part, stays right where he was: leading the office’s roughly 85 attorneys and 70 support staff under the “first assistant” title, with still no permanent nominee working its way through Congress.

Whatever happens next in court, Rogoff isn’t coming to this fight as an outsider. He spent 14 years as a King County prosecutor, six more as an assistant U.S. attorney, seven years on the King County Superior Court bench, and most recently ran the state’s first-ever Office of Independent Investigations.Whatever happens next in the Roger Rogoff fired controversy, he isn’t coming to this fight as an outsider.

A federal judge recently issued a blistering ruling against President Donald Trump and his legal team. The court declared that the president’s high-profile lawsuit against the IRS was filed for an “improper purpose.” According to the ruling, the case was a bad-faith effort to misuse the judicial system.

Indeed, the legal drama has escalated quickly. U.S. District Judge Kathleen M. Williams nullified a controversial settlement agreement between Trump and the IRS. This scuttled deal had previously proposed a massive $1.8 billion “anti-weaponization” taxpayer fund. Because of these actions, multiple attorneys now face potential disciplinary action.

How Trump’s Attorneys Misused the Courts

Historically, federal courts require two opposing sides with genuinely conflicting interests to resolve a dispute. However, Judge Williams pointed out that this lawsuit lacked any real conflict. She noted that Trump brought the case against a federal agency that he ultimately controls as president. Therefore, the two sides were not truly adversarial.

Instead, the court found that the plaintiffs used the lawsuit as a tool. But why did they do this? They wanted to gain a stamp of judicial legitimacy for a highly unusual settlement. The judge wrote that the agreement had no viable basis in law or fact. As a result, she ruled that the parties acted in bad faith to bypass standard legal boundaries.

Furthermore, you can read the full judicial breakdown on the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Florida website. The detailed 56-page order outlines how the parties manipulated the system.

THE COURT’S FINDINGS

Lack of Adverseness

Both sides ultimately reported to the president.

Improper Purpose

Used the lawsuit to legitimize a private deal.

Taxpayer Impact

Attempted to earmark $1.8 billion in public funds

Disciplinary Referrals for Trump’s Legal Team

Consequently, the attorneys involved in the case are facing serious professional fallout. Judge Williams referred Trump’s personal lawyer, Alejandro Brito, to the Florida Bar for potential disciplinary action. Additionally, she restricted the ability of attorney Daniel Epstein to practice in the local district.

But the penalties did not stop with the personal defense team. The judge also sent copies of her order to bar associations in New York and D.C. These copies target high-ranking Justice Department officials, including acting Attorney General Todd Blanche and Associate Attorney General Stanley Woodward. Both men had signed off on the settlement documents.

You can learn more about professional standards and ethics codes on the American Bar Association platform. These rules exist to prevent lawyers from abusing the court system.

The Fate of the $1.8 Billion Settlement

Originally, the lawsuit sought damages after a rogue contractor leaked Trump’s private tax returns. The contractor, Charles Littlejohn, was later sentenced to prison, as documented by the U.S. Department of Justice. However, the subsequent civil settlement went far beyond simple damages.

The agreement had attempted to permanently shield Trump and his family businesses from future IRS audits. Moreover, it sought to set aside $1.8 billion in taxpayer money for victims of “politicized” investigations. Because the court voided this agreement, those protections and the massive payout fund are officially dead.

Ultimately, this ruling sends a clear message. The judicial branch will not allow political figures to use the courts to validate self-serving financial deals.

It is an incredibly rare event when Supreme Court justices testify before Congress, but it is officially happening. Justices Amy Coney Barrett and Elena Kagan are heading to Capitol Hill. They need to defend a massive new budget request.

The high court wants a huge funding spike for the upcoming fiscal year. They are asking for millions in extra cash to ramp up security at their homes and offices. Threats against federal judges keep rising, so the court is taking no chances.

Why Supreme Court Justices Testify Before Congress

This joint appearance marks the first time members of the high court have taken the stand since 2019. Lawmakers on the House Appropriations subcommittee plan to focus strictly on expenses. But politicians rarely stick to the script.

The timing makes this hearing a total powder keg. The court just wrapped up a fiercely divisive summer term. Justices recently struck down a controversial executive order on birthright citizenship and blocked sweeping trade tariffs.

Both political parties are angry about different rulings. When Supreme Court justices testify before Congress, the atmosphere turns tense fast. Lawmakers will likely grill Kagan and Barrett on everything from ethics rules to recent legal blockbusters.

To follow related funding bills or specific congressional responses to the court’s request, search the Congress.gov database using the upcoming fiscal year parameters.

The Senate returns from recess today facing a sudden crisis.

Republican Senator Lindsey Graham died Saturday from an aortic dissection on Capitol Hill. Meanwhile, Minority Leader Mitch McConnell remains absent due to a severe hospital stay. These two events shifted Washington’s power balance overnight.

The sudden Lindsey Graham death on Saturday altered Washington math overnight. At the same time, the Mitch McConnell hospital absence thins the ranks further. The GOP majority has shrunk to a razor-thin 51-to-47 margin. Losing two influential leaders simultaneously creates a massive logistical nightmare for the party.

The Immediate Calendar Crunch & Senate Republican Majority Math

Congress has just seven weeks of floor time before midterm campaigning begins. The legislative to-do list is already backed up. Republicans face tight deadlines where every single absence delays progress:

Government Funding: The government faces a shutdown on September 30 without new spending bills.

The Attorney General Nomination: The impending Todd Blanche confirmation vote requires absolute party unity.

National Security: Expired surveillance laws need renewal. Additionally, the White House wants a Pentagon funding boost due to Iran tensions.

Graham chaired the Senate Budget Committee. His absence stalls the fast-track budget reconciliation process. Consequently, Republicans cannot easily bypass Democratic filibusters.

International Tremors: From NATO to Ukraine Aid

Graham’s passing leaves a massive void in American foreign policy. He remained an old-school Republican internationalist. He frequently visited active war zones and resisted isolationist shifts within his party.

His loss hits Kyiv hard. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky praised Graham as a true friend. For years, Graham secured Ukraine aid within the Senate GOP. He convinced conservative voters that supporting Kyiv protected American national security.

In Brussels, NATO officials worry about alliance stability. According to the official NATO Alliance Homepage, European defense strategies rely on steady support from Washington. Without Graham’s strong voice to whip defense votes, isolationist Republicans may stall future security packages.

McConnell’s Health and the Void of Information

McConnell’s situation has sparked questions for weeks. After a month of silence, the 84-year-old Kentucky senator released a statement on Sunday.

McConnell explained that a June fall knocked him unconscious. Doctors also treated him for mild pneumonia. He currently resides in a rehabilitation center and will not return to the Senate floor immediately.

What Happens Next in the South Carolina Special Election?
