Walmart Now Accepts Apple Pay and Google Pay
After more than a decade of holding out, retail giant Walmart has finally made a major change. The company announced it will begin accepting Apple Pay and Google Pay across all U.S. stores and Sam’s Club locations.
For years, Walmart stood apart as a major retail holdout. Instead of using third-party options, the company forced shoppers to use its own Walmart Pay app. Now, this strategic shift is a massive win for mobile payment users.
When Will Contactless Payments Roll Out?
The transition to modern contactless checkout will happen in phases:
-
Phase 1 Launch: The rollout kicks off on August 24, 2026, starting with select Walmart and Sam’s Club locations.
-
Full Store Coverage: The feature will expand to all U.S. stores and clubs by the end of 2026.
-
Fuel Stations: Walmart fuel stations will receive the contactless upgrade by mid-2027.
Despite these new additions, traditional payment methods are not going away. Shoppers can still use cash, physical chip cards, Walmart Pay, and Sam’s Club Scan & Go.
Why Did Walmart Change Its Mind?
For over ten years, Walmart avoided third-party digital wallets for two main reasons: customer data ownership and high transaction fees.
By using its own app, the company kept valuable shopper data in-house. It also avoided paying the processing fees charged by standard credit card networks.
However, things changed. Mounting consumer demand and the massive shift toward contactless shopping ultimately forced Walmart to pivot.

What This Means for Shoppers
Checking out at Walmart just got much faster. Customers no longer need to open a separate app or dig through their purses for physical cards. Instead, a quick tap of a smartphone or smartwatch at the register finishes the purchase.
As digital alternatives replace physical wallets, Walmart’s decision marks the official end of an era for retail holdouts. To learn more about how mobile security protects these transactions, visit the Apple Pay Security Overview.
