Doctors hospitalized all nine patients. Every case involved an open wound that touched seawater, and every patient had an underlying health condition.
Louisiana isn’t alone either. Florida just confirmed a second death, and cases are climbing in Maryland too.
What Is Vibrio Vulnificus?
Vibrio vulnificus is a bacteria that lives naturally in warm coastal waters. It peaks between May and October, when water temperatures rise.
People call it “flesh-eating bacteria” because of how severe the infections can get. That name sounds dramatic, but the risk is real. About 1 in 5 infected people die, according to the CDC, sometimes within a day or two of symptoms starting.
How Do People Get Infected?
Two main paths lead to infection:
- Open wound exposure. A cut, scrape, or even a piercing that touches contaminated seawater can let the bacteria in and trigger a serious wound infection.
- Raw or undercooked seafood. Oysters carry the biggest risk here.
Once inside the body, the bacteria can cause stomach illness, wound infections, or bloodstream infections. Bloodstream infections carry the highest danger.
Who’s Most at Risk?
Anyone can get infected, but some people face a much higher risk of severe complications:
- Liver disease
- Cancer
- Diabetes
- HIV
- Thalassemia
- Immune-suppressing treatment
- Medication that reduces stomach acid
- Recent stomach surgery

Wound infection symptoms:
- Redness, swelling, or pain around the wound
- Warmth or skin discoloration
- Drainage or discharge
Bloodstream infection symptoms:
- Fever and chills
- Dangerously low blood pressure
- Skin lesions
Stomach illness symptoms:
- Watery diarrhea
- Stomach cramps
- Nausea and vomiting
Seek medical care right away if you notice any of these after coastal water exposure or eating raw seafood. Tell your provider about the exposure. Speed matters here far more than with most infections.
