COVID-19 cases are climbing again this summer. A new variant and lower vaccination rates are driving the rise. Here’s what’s actually happening, plus a breakdown of the tools available if you get exposed or sick.

How Bad Is the Current Surge?

COVID-19 is now spreading across all four U.S. census regions. A variant known as Nimbus is driving it. The rise lines up with peak summer travel, too. Crowded airports, planes, and trains create more opportunities for the virus to spread.

It’s a similar pattern to what we covered in our recent piece on the Louisiana Vibrio vulnificus outbreak. Warm weather and travel both tend to accelerate how fast health threats spread.

Vaccination rates have dropped sharply, too. Just 17.5% of American adults and 8.9% of children got the 2025-2026 COVID vaccine, according to CDC data. That’s a steep decline from prior years. More people stay susceptible when cases start climbing.

Experts don’t expect a massive surge this time. Still, they recommend basic precautions, especially around travel and crowded settings.

What Is Xocova, and How Is It Different From Paxlovid?

Xocova (ensitrelvir) is a new tool most people haven’t heard of yet. The FDA approved it on May 29, 2026. It became available at select retail pharmacies nationwide on July 28, 2026.

It joins a small but growing list of emerging treatment options making headlines this year. Our coverage of the Candida auris superbug spread covers another one worth knowing about.

The key difference: Xocova prevents infection. Paxlovid treats it.

Xocova works after exposure but before symptoms appear, within 72 hours of contact with someone who has COVID-19. It’s the first oral drug approved in the U.S. specifically for this kind of post-exposure prevention.

Paxlovid kicks in after you already have symptoms and test positive. It reduces the risk of severe illness and long COVID.

Dosing differs too. Xocova involves three 125mg tablets on day one, then one tablet daily through day five. Paxlovid involves three tablets total (two nirmatrelvir, one ritonavir), taken twice daily for five days.

In clinical trials, Xocova cut the risk of developing symptomatic COVID-19 after household exposure by 67% compared to placebo. The most common side effects were headache, diarrhea, and cough.

One important note: Xocova isn’t cheap. It carries a list price of around $1,400. Many insurers don’t cover it yet, as of this writing. Doctors also stress it’s a backup layer of protection, not a replacement for vaccination. “Vaccine first,” as one infectious disease specialist put it. Xocova serves as a second line of defense after exposure.

Doctors should rule out pregnancy before starting Xocova. The drug also isn’t recommended for anyone with significant hypersensitivity to its active ingredient, or those taking certain medications metabolized by CYP3A.

What About the Vaccine Right Now?

This is genuinely confusing right now, and for good reason. Federal vaccine guidance has shifted multiple times over the past year.

The CDC currently recommends the 2025-2026 COVID-19 vaccine for people ages 6 months and older. That recommendation rests on individual, shared clinical decision-making between patients and their providers, rather than a blanket universal push.

Most people can still get it easily, though. Pharmacies administer about 90.5% of COVID vaccinations, without a prescription, and insurance typically covers the cost.

The Pregnancy Guidance Has Been Especially Messy

If you’re pregnant and trying to figure out whether to get vaccinated, you’re not imagining the confusion.

This isn’t an isolated case either. It fits the same pattern we covered in Trump’s executive order on spacing out childhood vaccines, where federal guidance and major medical groups have landed in different places. Here’s the timeline:

HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. initially moved to stop recommending COVID vaccines for pregnant women and children. That change rippled through CDC guidance for a period.

The CDC’s own vaccine advisory panel later reversed course. They voted that adults, a category that appears to include pregnant women based on updated CDC website language, can choose to get the vaccine after talking with their provider.

The CDC’s current official pregnancy guidance states plainly: COVID-19 vaccination during pregnancy hasn’t been linked to increased health risks for pregnant women or babies. It helps reduce the risk of severe illness, too. The agency also notes that most babies hospitalized with COVID-19 were born to mothers who weren’t vaccinated during pregnancy.

Medical groups have gone further than the CDC. The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) still recommends routine COVID-19 vaccination for anyone who is pregnant, trying to conceive, recently pregnant, or breastfeeding. They treat it as standard preventive care, not a shared decision to weigh case by case.

Why the extra caution for pregnancy specifically? The CDC classifies pregnancy as a higher-risk condition for severe COVID-19 outcomes, including hospitalization, ICU admission, and death. Despite that, only 11.1% of pregnant women had gotten a COVID-19 vaccine as of February 2026, according to CDC data. That’s a sharp gap between the recommendation and actual uptake.

Bottom line for pregnant readers: talk to your OB-GYN directly. ACOG’s guidance leans firmly toward recommending vaccination at any point in pregnancy, even as broader federal messaging has shifted toward a more hands-off, individual-decision framing.

What Should You Actually Do?

Haven’t had an updated vaccine in the past six months? If you’re eligible, this window, before the surge peaks and before any fall vaccine arrives, is a reasonable time to consider it.

65 or older, or have an underlying condition? Talk to your doctor now about both vaccination and Xocova or Paxlovid, before you’re exposed.

Test positive? Ask your provider about Paxlovid, especially if you’re in a high-risk group. Starting it early in the illness matters most.

Pregnant? Talk to your OB-GYN directly rather than relying on general headlines, given how much the guidance has shifted this year.

Bottom Line

COVID-19 hasn’t gone away, and this summer’s surge is a reminder of that. Falling vaccination rates, a new antiviral in Xocova, and genuinely confusing federal guidance on pregnancy all add up to a lot to sort through.

Still, the throughline from health experts stays clear: vaccines remain the first line of defense. Xocova and Paxlovid serve as backup tools after exposure or infection. And pregnant readers should lean on their own OB-GYN’s guidance, given how unsettled the federal messaging has been.

Pet owners have another recall to check for. Oma’s Pride has voluntarily recalled one lot of its dog food after testing turned up Salmonella contamination, and at least three human illnesses have already been linked to the product.

Here’s what’s recalled, and what to do if you have it at home.

What’s Being Recalled?

Oma’s Pride, based in Avon, Connecticut, is recalling one lot of Woof Complete Canine Chicken Recipe, sold in 6-pound bags. The affected lot number is BB012729.

The recalled bags carry a manufacture date of January 27, 2026 and an expiration date of January 27, 2029. In total, 639 bags were affected. Exact UPC and SKU numbers are available on the FDA’s website. No other Oma’s Pride products are included in this recall.

Why Was It Recalled?

The FDA received a consumer complaint, then collected and tested a sample of the product. That test came back positive for Salmonella.

Three human illnesses have already been reported in connection with the contaminated food, according to Food Safety News.

Can This Make People Sick, Not Just Dogs?

Yes, and that’s an important part of this recall. Pets carrying Salmonella can spread it to the people handling their food, even if the pet itself never shows symptoms.

Symptoms in dogs can include lethargy, diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, fever, vomiting, decreased appetite, and abdominal pain. Some infected pets show no symptoms at all but can still carry and spread the bacteria to other animals or people.

Symptoms in people typically include diarrhea, fever, and stomach cramps, usually starting 6 hours to 6 days after exposure. Most people recover within 4 to 7 days without needing treatment.

What Should You Do If You Have This Product?

Stop feeding it to your dog immediately.

Don’t donate it or give it to any other animal.

Throw it away in a sealed trash bag, placed inside a sealed trash can so wildlife can’t get into it.

Wash and sanitize any containers, bowls, scoops, or utensils that may have touched the food.

Wash your hands thoroughly after handling the recalled product or anything it touched.

Keep children away from the recalled food entirely.

Watch for symptoms in both your pet and yourself, and contact a veterinarian or doctor if either of you develops signs of illness.

Is This Part of a Bigger Pattern?

Unfortunately, yes. Salmonella remains the single most common cause of pet food recalls, and raw or freeze-dried diets in particular carry the highest documented contamination risk under FDA testing standards.

This isn’t an isolated case in 2026 either.

Cardiologists just rewrote the rulebook on cholesterol. In March 2026, the American College of Cardiology (ACC) and American Heart Association (AHA), along with nine other leading medical groups, released updated guidelines that reshape how doctors evaluate and treat cholesterol risk.

Here’s what changed, and why experts are calling it a genuine shift in how heart disease prevention works.

Why Did the Guidelines Change?

This is the first major update since 2018. Cholesterol guidelines don’t follow a fixed schedule. Instead, they get revised when new research points to a better way to catch risk early and prevent disease.

The new guideline retires and replaces the 2018 version entirely. It’s officially titled the “2026 Guideline on the Management of Dyslipidemia,” a broader term covering cholesterol, triglycerides, and other blood lipids, not just LDL.

The stakes are significant. An estimated 1 in 4 U.S. adults has high LDL cholesterol, which raises the risk of heart attack and stroke.

New LDL Targets, Tailored by Risk Level

The guidelines now set three separate LDL cholesterol targets, based on individual risk:

90 mg/dL for people without existing cardiovascular disease
70 mg/dL for people with significant risk factors
55 mg/dL for people at the highest risk

One cardiologist involved in the update called it a genuine “paradigm shift,” since the guidance now pushes for lower targets sustained over a longer stretch of a person’s life, rather than treating cholesterol as a problem to manage later in adulthood.

Cholesterol Screening Now Starts Earlier

The new guidelines apply to people as young as 30. That’s a notable shift toward catching risk decades before a heart attack or stroke might occur.

Doctors now also assess risk two ways: a traditional 10-year risk estimate, plus a newer 30-year risk assessment. That longer window helps identify people who look low-risk in the short term but carry meaningful risk over their lifetime.

Even childhood matters now. The guidelines specifically note how high cholesterol during childhood and adolescence affects heart disease risk later in life, and support earlier lifestyle intervention starting young.

A New Blood Test Enters the Picture

The guidelines recommend a one-time screening for lipoprotein(a), or Lp(a), a genetic risk factor most people have never heard of. Unlike LDL, Lp(a) levels are largely determined by genetics rather than diet or lifestyle, which makes a single early test valuable for uncovering hidden risk that routine cholesterol panels can miss.

Lifestyle Still Comes First

Despite all the new numbers and tests, the guidelines lead with the basics:

Avoiding tobacco products
Regular physical activity
Healthy sleep habits
Maintaining a healthy weight
Cholesterol-lowering medication, when a doctor prescribes it

Medication comes into play earlier for specific groups, too. That includes young adults with LDL levels of 160 mg/dL or higher, people with a strong family history of heart disease, and anyone with a genetic condition called familial hypercholesterolemia.

Bottom Line

This update marks the biggest change to cholesterol guidance in nearly a decade. Lower LDL targets, earlier screening starting at 30, a new genetic risk test, and a longer-term view of cardiovascular risk all point toward the same goal: catching heart disease risk years, sometimes decades, before it becomes a heart attack or stroke.

President Trump signed an executive order Monday that pushes for major changes to how children receive vaccines in the United States. The move puts him at odds with the country’s leading pediatric and medical organizations.

Here’s what the order actually does, and why doctors are pushing back.

What Does the Executive Order Do?

The order calls for spacing out childhood vaccines into separate medical visits and splitting the combined measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) vaccine into three separate single-disease shots.

It also directs the nation’s health department to expand research on vaccines and develop a plan to offer separate measles, mumps, and rubella shots, since that combination doesn’t currently exist as three standalone vaccines in the U.S.

Why Is Trump Pushing This?

At the Oval Office signing, Trump repeatedly suggested the number or timing of childhood vaccines could be linked to rising autism rates. That claim runs counter to the scientific record. Decades of research and the broad scientific consensus have found no link between vaccines and autism.

The White House framed the move around giving parents clearer guidance, arguing that families deserve evidence-based recommendations rather than competing guidance shaped by political processes.

Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. was present for the signing.

What Do Medical Groups Say?

Doctors and public health experts have raised real safety concerns about the spacing approach specifically. Public health experts warn that spreading out vaccines increases the risk that a child could catch a vaccine-preventable disease in the window between visits.

This isn’t the first clash between the administration and pediatric groups this year. Back in January, the American Academy of Pediatrics broke from the CDC entirely, issuing its own updated vaccine recommendations covering 18 diseases, a direct contrast to the administration’s slimmed-down federal schedule. A dozen additional medical and health care organizations endorsed the AAP’s version.

The pediatricians’ schedule keeps broad endorsements for vaccines targeting RSV, hepatitis A and B, rotavirus, influenza, meningococcal disease, measles, and pertussis.

Has This Come Up Before?

Yes. Trump has floated several of these same vaccine schedule changes before, but a federal judge has already blocked prior attempts by his health department to implement them.

The flu shot has become a specific flashpoint too. The AAP’s own January guidance included a flu vaccine recommendation, backed by groups including the National Medical Association and the Pediatric Infectious Diseases Society, citing data that over 80% of childhood flu deaths occurred in unvaccinated or incompletely vaccinated children, with kids under 5 at the highest risk. Trump has said the flu vaccine is “no longer recommended for all children.”

Why Now?

The renewed vaccine push marks a shift for the administration, which had recently focused on less controversial health topics like healthy eating, drug price negotiations, and medical fraud crackdowns ahead of November’s midterm elections.

Bottom Line

This executive order sets up a deepening split between the White House and the country’s major pediatric and medical organizations. Trump argues families deserve simpler, more cautious guidance. Doctors argue the spacing approach adds real infection risk without any scientific backing for the autism claim driving it. For more on how this policy develops, check out [our latest coverage of health and policy news] on the site.

This article will be updated as medical groups and health agencies respond further.

But why do these three things carry so much weight? Here’s what’s actually happening inside your body when you get them right, and when you don’t.

Why Sleep Matters So Much

Sleep isn’t just downtime. Instead, it’s when your body runs essential maintenance.

During deep sleep, your brain clears out waste products that build up during the day, including proteins linked to Alzheimer’s disease. Meanwhile, your body repairs muscle tissue, consolidates memories, and resets hormone levels that control hunger and stress.

Skimp on sleep, and the effects show up fast. Just one night of poor sleep can raise levels of the stress hormone cortisol, weaken immune function, and impair decision-making the next day. Over time, chronic sleep deprivation gets linked to higher risks of heart disease, diabetes, and depression.

Adults generally need 7 to 9 hours a night. Consistency matters too. Going to bed and waking up at similar times each day helps regulate your body’s internal clock, which affects everything from digestion to mood.

Why Exercise Does More Than Burn Calories

Movement isn’t just about weight management. In fact, exercise triggers changes at a cellular level.

Physical activity improves how your body uses insulin, which helps regulate blood sugar and lowers diabetes risk. It also strengthens your heart muscle, improves circulation, and helps keep blood pressure in a healthy range.

There’s a mental health angle too. Exercise releases endorphins and other mood-regulating chemicals, which is part of why a walk can genuinely improve a bad day. Research also links regular activity to lower rates of anxiety and depression, along with better long-term brain health as people age.

You don’t need extreme workouts to get these benefits. The CDC recommends 150 minutes of moderate activity per week, roughly 30 minutes, five days a week. Walking counts. So does gardening, dancing, or playing with your kids in the backyard.

Why Diet Shapes Nearly Everything Else

Food isn’t just fuel. It’s also raw material. Your body uses what you eat to build cells, produce hormones, and maintain your immune system.

A poor diet doesn’t just add pounds. It can also drive chronic inflammation, a root contributor to heart disease, certain cancers, and autoimmune conditions. On the flip side, a diet rich in vegetables, fruits, whole grains, and lean protein supports steady energy, better mood regulation, and stronger immune defense.

Gut health plays a bigger role here than most people realize too. Your digestive system houses trillions of bacteria that influence digestion, immunity, and even mental health through what’s often called the gut-brain connection. Diet directly shapes which bacteria thrive in there.

Why These Three Work Together

Here’s the part that often gets missed: sleep, exercise, and diet don’t operate in isolation. Instead, they influence each other constantly.

Poor sleep, for example, increases cravings for sugar and processed food the next day. Skipping exercise can make it harder to fall asleep at night. And a diet high in processed foods can disrupt the very sleep cycles your body needs to recover from a workout.

In other words, improving one area often makes the other two easier. That’s why health experts tend to treat these three as a package deal rather than separate goals.

Bottom Line

Sleep, exercise, and diet aren’t just wellness buzzwords. They’re the three biggest levers your body has for maintaining itself, from clearing brain waste at night to regulating blood sugar and fighting inflammation. Small, consistent improvements in all three tend to matter more than perfection in just one. For more health explainers like this, check out our latest health coverage on the site.

Where Did the Contamination Start?

Investigators traced the outbreak back to fresh jalapeños grown in Sinaloa, Mexico. From there, Coast Citrus Distributors imported and distributed the peppers. As a result, they reached restaurants, food service companies, and other distributors across the country.

The FDA also found something striking. 93% of interviewed patients ate at a Mexican-style restaurant before getting sick. That group, for example, included major chains Chipotle and Qdoba.

Both chains reacted fast. First, Chipotle pulled jalapeños from affected restaurants on July 20. Then, Qdoba stopped serving jalapeños entirely on July 28. Because both chains already removed the product, the FDA says neither poses an ongoing risk now.

What’s Now Being Recalled?

However, the outbreak didn’t stay contained to restaurants. Instead, it spread to grocery store products too.

So, USDA’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) named 18 specific meat and poultry products. All of them contain the recalled jalapeños.

Notably, fourteen of those products came from four different Taylor Farms plants. Other brands on the list include:

First, check your fridge and freezer against the full FSIS product list.
Found a match? Throw it out or return it. Either way, don’t taste-test food to check if it’s spoiled, since salmonella contamination doesn’t always change how food looks, smells, or tastes.

Next, clean and sanitize any surfaces or containers that may have touched the recalled product. This step helps avoid cross-contamination.

Also, watch for symptoms. Typically, diarrhea, fever, and stomach cramps show up 6 hours to 6 days after eating contaminated food.

Above all, call your doctor right away if symptoms show up after eating any of the recalled items.

Got questions about a specific product? You can call the USDA Meat and Poultry Hotline at 888-674-6854, or email MPHotline@usda.gov.

Similarly, food safety keeps making headlines this summer.
Bottom Line

This outbreak already stretches across 27 states, and it keeps growing. So far, it’s reached grocery store shelves through 18 recalled meat and poultry products.

So, did you buy anything from Taylor Farms, Marketside, or the other brands listed above recently? If so, it’s worth checking your fridge today.

Five of them died.

Here’s what’s actually happening, and how you can protect yourself.

How Bad Is This Outbreak?

The numbers this year sit well above normal. Louisiana averaged just seven cases and one death per year over the past decade. This year already brought nine cases and five deaths, and the season isn’t over yet.

Doctors hospitalized all nine patients. Every case involved an open wound that touched seawater, and every patient had an underlying health condition.

Louisiana isn’t alone either. Florida just confirmed a second death, and cases are climbing in Maryland too.

What Is Vibrio Vulnificus?

Vibrio vulnificus is a bacteria that lives naturally in warm coastal waters. It peaks between May and October, when water temperatures rise.

People call it “flesh-eating bacteria” because of how severe the infections can get. That name sounds dramatic, but the risk is real. About 1 in 5 infected people die, according to the CDC, sometimes within a day or two of symptoms starting.

How Do People Get Infected?

Two main paths lead to infection:

Open wound exposure. A cut, scrape, or even a piercing that touches contaminated seawater can let the bacteria in and trigger a serious wound infection.

Raw or undercooked seafood. Oysters carry the biggest risk here.

Once inside the body, the bacteria can cause stomach illness, wound infections, or bloodstream infections. Bloodstream infections carry the highest danger.

Who’s Most at Risk?

Anyone can get infected, but some people face a much higher risk of severe complications:

An American stationed at the U.S. McMurdo Station in Antarctica needed urgent medical evacuation this week. Getting them out meant flying into one of the most dangerous environments on Earth, in total darkness, in the dead of the Antarctic winter.

Here’s how the rescue actually happened.

What Happened?

The U.S. National Science Foundation, which manages the Antarctic program, requested help after an American expeditioner at McMurdo Station needed emergency medical treatment.

The NSF turned to the Australian Antarctic Division and the New Zealand Defence Force for assistance. The mission launched on July 28, described as an “urgent request for assistance.”

Why Was This So Dangerous?

Winter in Antarctica isn’t just cold. It’s total darkness, extreme weather, and ice landings all at once.

An early attempt on July 29 got delayed by severe weather. The mission finally launched on July 31, when a Skytraders Airbus A319, nicknamed Snowbird 1, departed Australia at 2:44 a.m. local time.

The flight reached McMurdo Station more than five hours later. Conditions on the ground were brutal:

Complete darkness

Temperatures as low as -45.5°F (-43°C)

A narrow weather window that could close at any moment

Flight crews and medical teams worked fast to transfer the patient onto the plane. The mission departed Antarctica just ahead of deteriorating conditions, then flew on to Christchurch, New Zealand, where the patient was treated.

What Did the Rescue Team Say?

Crew members described the mission as right at the edge of what even specialized aircraft can handle.

Before the flight, the team reportedly ran through worst-case scenarios. That included a possible power outage at the airstrip, which would force a zero-visibility landing. The plane also carried extra fuel in case it couldn’t land at all and had to turn back to Australia.

One crew member described the workload as constant mental math, from cold-weather calculations to altitude corrections on approach, all while coordinating closely with the rest of the flight crew.

Is This Common?

No. Mid-winter medical evacuations from Antarctica are rare, precisely because the risk is so high.

This isn’t the first time it’s happened, though. In a separate incident, New Zealand’s air force carried out a nearly 20-hour mission to evacuate three Americans from McMurdo Station after they couldn’t get the care they needed on-site. One needed urgent treatment. The other two were moved as a precaution.

Officials involved in these operations have consistently described winter flights to Antarctica as among the most difficult missions they run, due to constantly shifting weather and the challenge of landing safely using night vision equipment in near-total darkness.

What Happens Now?

The American who was evacuated this time was admitted to Christchurch Hospital in serious condition, according to the National Science Foundation. No further details about the individual have been released.

Bottom Line

Getting one person out of Antarctica during winter took an international effort, a specially outfitted aircraft, and a crew willing to fly into some of the harshest conditions on the planet. It’s a reminder of just how isolated and extreme life at McMurdo Station really is, even with modern aviation technology backing it up.
This article will be updated as more details become available.

Did you buy eggs recently? Stop what you’re doing and go check your fridge right now.

The FDA just announced a massive egg recall. It is tied to a serious Salmonella outbreak. Over 20 million eggs are affected. So far, 98 people have gotten sick, and 26 have ended up in the hospital.

You need to know exactly what to look for to keep your family safe. Here is the breakdown.

Which Brands Are Recalled?

This recall hits some major grocery store shelves. It includes both white and brown cage-free eggs.

Check your carton if you bought any of these brands:

Kroger

Simple Truth (Cage Free)

Brookshire’s

Country Morning

Cal-Maine Sunups

These eggs were mostly sold in Texas, Oklahoma, Louisiana, Arkansas, Mississippi, and New Mexico. However, the FDA warns they might have been shipped to other states, too.

How to Check Your Egg Carton

Don’t throw away perfectly good eggs just yet. You only need to toss them if they match specific codes.

Grab your carton and look at the side. You are looking for three things:

The Date: Is the “Sell-By” or “Best-By” date between July 20, 2026, and August 17, 2026?

The Plant Code: Do you see P-1950 or 0840962 printed on the carton?

The Julian Date: Is there a three-digit number between 157 and 184?

If your carton matches, you have the recalled eggs.

A quick tip: If you take your eggs out of the carton and put them in a plastic fridge tray, throw them out to be safe. You can’t check the codes without the original box.

What Should You Do Next?

If you have these eggs, do not eat them. Don’t cook them. Don’t serve them.

Trash or Return: Put the eggs in a sealed plastic bag. Throw them in the garbage. You can also take them back to the store for a full refund.

Clean Up: Did the eggs touch your fridge shelf or an egg holder? Wash those surfaces right away with hot, soapy water.

Wash Your Hands: Scrub your hands well for 20 seconds after touching the carton.

Want to see the official notice? You can read the full FDA Outbreak Investigation here.

Watch Out for These Symptoms

If you accidentally ate these eggs, pay attention to how you feel. Salmonella symptoms usually kick in 12 to 72 hours later.

Look out for:

Stomach cramps

Diarrhea

Nausea

Most people get better in a few days. But it can be very dangerous for kids, older adults, and anyone with a weak immune system. Call your doctor right away if you feel severe symptoms.

Stay Safe Out There

Have you seen the scary news lately? Headlines are screaming about a new “superbug.” It is called Candida auris. And it is spreading in some US hospitals.

Hearing the word “superbug” is terrifying. It sounds like a horror movie. But before you panic, let’s take a deep breath.

Here is the plain truth about this fungus. Let’s look at what it is, why it is in the news, and who is actually at risk.

What is Candida auris?

Candida auris is a type of fungus. Specifically, it is a yeast.

We all have regular yeast on our skin. Usually, it is totally harmless. But this specific bug is different. It can get inside the bloodstream. When it does, it causes serious infections.

It was first spotted in 2009. By 2016, it reached the United States. Now, cases are steadily rising.

(Trending in Health: Health Alert: Mysterious US Foodborne Outbreak Sparks Investigation Across 20 States)

Why call it a “Superbug”?

Doctors call it a superbug for two main reasons.

First, it ignores medication. Normal fungal infections are easy to treat. A simple pill or cream usually works. But Candida auris is stubborn. It actively resists many common antifungal drugs.

Second, it loves to stick around. Most bugs die quickly on hard surfaces. Not this one. It can live on hospital beds and medical gear for weeks. This makes it very hard for hospitals to clean up.

Are you at risk?

Here is the good news. Healthy people are at a very low risk.

You will not catch this at the grocery store. You will not get it at the gym. This bug mostly spreads inside specialized healthcare centers. (Though if you are worried about what is at the grocery store right now, you may want to check out Why Food Recalls Hit Record Highs in 2026).

It targets people who are already very sick. The highest risk is for patients in intensive care units or nursing homes. It affects people with weak immune systems. It also enters the body through medical tubes, like IVs or catheters.

If you are generally healthy, your immune system fights it off easily.

How can you stay safe?

You do not need to change your daily life. You do not need special masks or hazmat suits. Just like knowing when to use Cold Water Immersion for Heat Stroke during the summer heat, basic health knowledge and common sense go a long way.

But what if you visit a sick family member in the hospital? Just wash your hands.

Use plenty of warm soap and water. Or, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer. Clean your hands before you enter their room. Clean them again the moment you leave.

(Related: Check Your Eggs. Nearly 20 Million Just Got Recalled.)

The Bottom Line

Candida auris is a real problem for hospitals. Doctors and nurses are working hard to stop it from spreading.

But for the general public? It is not a daily threat. Stay informed, wash your hands, and skip the panic.
